Punjab Budget 2026: The most money for education, free treatment up to 1 million
The Punjab government has unveiled its budget for 2026, prioritizing education and healthcare with significant funding and new initiatives.
The Punjab state government, led by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, has presented its budget for the year 2026 ahead of the assembly session. The budget emphasizes developmental sectors including education, healthcare, agriculture, rural development, industry, and urban infrastructure. In this financial plan, several new schemes have been announced while existing programs will be expanded to further bolster the state’s economy and public services.
A substantial allocation of ₹19,279 crores has been earmarked for the education sector. This includes the launch of the 'Sikhia Kranti 2.0' initiative, which aims to invest approximately ₹3,500 crores over the next six years in improving educational facilities. The government claims to have made significant investments in the infrastructure of nearly 20,000 government schools, aiming to elevate the quality of education in the state. Additionally, 118 Schools of Eminence are being developed to cultivate talent and provide better educational opportunities, while digital education is being advanced through the installation of 38,649 computers and 8,268 interactive panels across schools. Plans for a career counseling portal have also been outlined to guide students in their future professional paths.
In terms of healthcare, the government is focusing on strengthening health services with the introduction of free medical treatment up to ₹1 million. This initiative reflects a commitment to enhancing the accessibility and quality of healthcare services for the residents of Punjab. The budget aims not only to sustain ongoing services but also to introduce innovative solutions that cater to the health needs of the population, indicative of a broader strategy to ensure comprehensive development in education and health, integral sectors for the state's growth.
