The end of the title for maternity leave: residents have poured in serious and funny suggestions
Lithuanian citizens are suggesting both serious and humorous names for a new maternity leave title, with a selection process ongoing.
Lithuania is in the midst of a public competition to rename maternity leave, inviting citizens to submit their suggestions by mid-December. According to Ignas Algirdas Dobrovolskas, an advisor to the Prime Minister, there has been a collection of proposals, which are currently being evaluated for appropriateness. The government's Social Policy Group has held meetings with representatives from the State Commission of the Lithuanian Language to discuss the legitimacy of the suggestions, and are now awaiting further evaluation from this institution which will influence the final decision.
The suggestions submitted by the public range from practical to comical, reflecting a diverse approach to the issue. Some of the proposed names include "work for child education," "child care time," and even playful terms like "baby time" and "intensive child care period." Dobrovolskas noted that while these examples illustrate the creativity of the citizens, it does not guarantee that the final name will be selected from these submissions.
Once the evaluations are complete, the government will determine how to proceed with accepting a final title for maternity leave. This initiative not only engages public input in policy-making but also highlights societal attitudes towards parenting and childcare in Lithuania. The outcome may influence future discussions on children’s welfare and parental rights in the country.
