Teacher creates a project at UEPB to welcome and give prominence to women in the field of computing

A Paraíba teacher has initiated a project to support and increase the participation of women in computing courses at the UEPB in Campina Grande.

Luciana Gomes, a professor at the State University of Paraíba (UEPB), has established a project called 'Women in Computing' aimed at fostering the participation of female students in technology courses. Started in 2020 with just two participants, this initiative has grown significantly, providing a supportive network for students and raising awareness about the technology field in the local community. The project addresses the longstanding issue of gender disparity in technical disciplines that Luciana herself experienced during her own time as a student.

The 'Women in Computing' project not only offers support to female students in their academic pursuits but also serves as a platform for community engagement. By encouraging more women to participate in computing, the project aims to change the narrative around gender roles in technology and empower young women to pursue careers in this male-dominated field. With a growing number of students involved, Luciana is working to create lasting change within the educational environment of UEPB and beyond.

Luciana Gomes's efforts have gained attention and could serve as a model for similar initiatives elsewhere, emphasizing the importance of inclusive practices in education. As gender equality in STEM fields continues to be a pressing issue, projects like this are crucial for paving the way for future generations of women in technology, thus contributing to a more balanced workforce.
