Second Spirit of Tasmania ferry departs Scotland for Melbourne

The second new Spirit of Tasmania ferry has commenced its journey from Scotland to Australia, with scheduled sailings to begin in October.

The Spirit of Tasmania V, one of the two newly constructed ferries, has set sail from Leith, Scotland, embarking on a seven-week voyage to Melbourne, Australia. This ferry, 212 meters in length, is expected to follow a historically significant route that includes a passage down the west coast of Africa, similar to its sister ship's journey. The ferry operator, TT-Line, has announced that upon its arrival in Fremantle, Western Australia, the vessel will dock for several days to undergo various administrative and logistical preparations including Customs and Immigration formalities, refuelling, and stocking up on provisions. The ship is set to remain in Melbourne until there is a berth available in Hobart, which is expected to occur after the cruise ship season concludes, around late Autumn. With operations slated to commence in October, the Spirit of Tasmania V is anticipated to enhance maritime transport between Tasmania and the mainland, catering to passenger and freight services. This development also reflects the continued investment in the region's transport infrastructure, aiming to bolster tourism and trade as Tasmania increasingly positions itself as a key travel destination.
