Lake Juruti Velho receives 1,173 tracajá hatchlings during release in the community

The Capitão community near Lake Juruti Velho released 1,173 tracajá hatchlings as part of a long-standing conservation effort.

On the morning of Saturday, November 7, the Capitão community, located on the banks of Lake Juruti Velho, celebrated the release of 1,173 tracajá hatchlings back into their natural habitat. The event attracted locals, students, and representatives from the Municipal Environment Secretariat of Juruti (Semma). The program began with a thanksgiving ceremony and blessing for the turtles at the community's social headquarters, followed by environmental-themed dance performances and the awarding of certificates to nine volunteer environmental agents dedicated to wildlife protection in the area.

Following the initial ceremonies, participants traveled to a more secluded beach area where the hatchlings were released into the water, contributing to the repopulation efforts of the lake. This initiative reflects a 26-year commitment to conservation by the Capitão community, which begins each September with the collection of eggs from the lakeside beaches. Once the eggs are collected, they are taken to an incubator on the shore, where hatchlings emerge between November and December, ready for their return to the wild.

The ongoing conservation efforts not only foster the preservation of the tracajá species but also serve as an educational platform for the community's youth, enhancing civic engagement and environmental awareness. The initiative is a testament to the community's dedication to ensuring the survival of local wildlife while promoting sustainable practices among residents and future generations.
