The investigation by the Hungarian media outlet Vastagbor revealed that these images were disseminated within an article published by Ripost, a tabloid closely affiliated with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's ruling Fidesz party. This targeting of Ukraine is significant given the current diplomatic tensions between Hungary and Ukraine, particularly over various political disagreements.

The article on Ripost saw an extraordinary reaction rate on social media, accumulating around 48,000 interactions, which starkly contrasts with typical engagement figures that range from 10 to 200 for other posts. Vastagbor pointed out that most of these reactions seemed to stem from fake profiles, many appearing to have Romanian or Moldovan names, suggesting that this might be part of broader Russian efforts to manipulate elections and public perception in Moldova. Their analysis deduced that around 99% of the user accounts that engaged with the disinformation post were identified as bots, highlighting the orchestrated nature of this campaign.
