"Ukraine, you have all annoyed us," – Russians spread viral lie about Hungarian skier at the Olympics
A viral false story about a Hungarian skier's reaction to Ukrainian athletes' protests at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics has spread among pro-Russian media.
A false narrative has gone viral online regarding Hungarian skier 33-year-old Adam Konya allegedly responding to the Ukrainian athletes' protests during the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics. According to the fabricated story, Konya was seen displaying a statement on his hand that read, "Ukraine, you have all annoyed us" in response to anti-Russian slogans on the Ukrainian athletes’ uniforms and on a skeleton racer’s helmet. The story quickly gained traction among pro-Russian media outlets that promoted it across their social media channels.
Media outlets have also exaggerated the original phrase by replacing the word "annoyed" with a more vulgar Russian term. However, after scrutiny over the accuracy of the image associated with the claim, it was revealed that the narrative was entirely false. The original image published on the Hungarian national team’s website shows that there is no bandage on A. Konya’s glove, contradicting the claims made in the altered images that were shared widely.
This incident highlights the ongoing manipulation of sports and political narratives in the context of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The spread of such misinformation not only distorts the reality of athletic events but also reflects the ways in which international sports can become battlegrounds for political discourse, ultimately undermining the spirit of the Olympics and public trust in media reporting.
