After a four-year closure for refurbishment, the Newcastle Art Gallery has reopened its doors to the public following a successful $48 million expansion. The community response has been enthusiastic, with a massive turnout of 18,000 attendees celebrating the grand reopening during a street party, and 10,000 visitors exploring the gallery over its opening weekend. This revitalization of the iconic brutalist building, which first opened in 1977, introduced an impressive 1,600 square meters of additional exhibition space spread across 13 galleries, enabling the gallery to host a more comprehensive and diverse collection.

The gallery's director, Lauretta Morton, expressed excitement over the new layout, remarking that the expansion allows for the gallery’s collection to be displayed permanently on the ground floor for the first time. This means that visitors can enjoy a more immersive experience with art from various forms and periods.
