BR-495 is reopened for light vehicles after 15 days of closure in the Serra

BR-495, a key highway linking Petrópolis to Teresópolis, has been reopened for light vehicles after a 15-day closure due to severe damage from heavy rains.

The BR-495 highway, which connects the towns of Petrópolis and Teresópolis in Rio de Janeiro, has been reopened to light vehicles after a near two-week closure prompted by significant structural damage. Authorities reported that large cracks and sinkholes had formed mainly at kilometer 23, a situation exacerbated by heavy rainfall experienced at the end of February. The Department of National Transport Infrastructure (Dnit) announced that the road's reopening comes with the implementation of a temporary traffic management system, allowing a 'stop and go' diversion exclusively for smaller vehicles to ensure safety during repair works.

A detailed inspection carried out by the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) confirmed the necessity of these measures. Following the inspection, a meeting between MPF officials and Dnit representatives led to the decision to establish a provisional traffic scheme. Although Dnit already had an emergency contract in place to address the pavement issues, actual repair work had not yet commenced, leading to recommendations for increased caution among drivers using the detour.

While the reopening is a relief for local commuters and businesses reliant on this route, the situation underscores ongoing infrastructure challenges in Brazil, particularly in regions prone to adverse weather conditions. Continuous monitoring and quick responses to such incidents are vital to ensure the safety and efficiency of vital transport links in the future.
