Violence against women in Piauí increases by 17.6%; partners are the authors of 76% of feminicides, says report

A report reveals a 17.6% increase in violence against women in Piauí, with 76% of feminicides committed by partners or ex-partners.

Violence against women in Piauí has surged by 17.6% in 2025 according to the report 'Elas Vivem: a urgência da vida', released by the Network of Security Observatories. The state reported 379 women victims of various forms of violence last year. This alarming increase highlights the growing risk women face, particularly within their homes, with partners or ex-partners accounting for 76.7% of female murder cases.

The study, which monitored data across nine states, indicates that Piauí is enduring a structural crisis of misogyny and control over women’s bodies, similar to trends observed nationwide. While overall violence escalates, violent deaths of women, including feminicides and homicides, rose by 4.8% in the state. Teresina, the capital, emerged as the city with the highest incidence, accounting for 29.3% of the recorded victims in Piauí and 32.1% of the feminicides, ultimately spotlighting a dire need for interventions.

The report underscores the grave implications of these findings, illustrating that a woman's denial of advances may ultimately cost her life, as the primary motivations behind these crimes include rejection and control. Such statistics not only shed light on the urgent need for protective measures and social reform in Piauí but also call for a broader national dialogue on the endemic issues surrounding violence against women in Brazil.
