House functioning as an unauthorized shelter for the elderly is the subject of allegations of mistreatment in Botucatu

A police investigation in Botucatu, Brazil, targets an unauthorized elderly shelter following allegations of mistreatment and poor living conditions.

In Botucatu, São Paulo, local authorities are investigating a case of mistreatment at an unauthorized shelter for the elderly. This follows an anonymous tip that led police, along with Health Surveillance agents, to inspect the premises. Upon arrival, they found two elderly individuals and a man with mental disorders being housed in deplorable conditions, reportedly financed by their families.

The investigation revealed that the facility operated without the necessary registration or health permits, highlighting serious regulatory failures. Health inspectors assessed the living conditions, finding them inadequate particularly regarding food, medication, and hygiene practices essential for the care of vulnerable individuals.

In response to the violations, the person in charge of the shelter was fined by Health Surveillance and given 72 hours to return the residents to their families. This incident raises significant concerns about the safety and care of elderly persons in unregulated facilities, prompting calls for stricter oversight and regulations in elder care services throughout Brazil.
