'The child belongs to both', says executive while requesting equal parental and maternity leave

Simone Caracante Moras, a director at Volkswagen Financial Services in Brazil, advocates for equal parental leave for both mothers and fathers, emphasizing that the recent increase in paternity leave is not enough.

Simone Caracante Moras, the marketing and sales director at Volkswagen Financial Services, recently expressed her views on the necessity of equal parental leave for both mothers and fathers in Brazil. Following the Senate's approval of a gradual increase in paternity leave, which will extend from five days to 20 days by January 1, 2029, Moras argued that this change is insufficient and that both parents should receive the same duration of leave time. Currently, mothers benefit from four months of maternity leave, and six months if the company is part of the 'Empresa Cidadã' program, highlighting a distinct disparity in parental leave rights.

With International Women's Day approaching, Moras drew attention to the ongoing issues of sustainability and diversity in corporate structures. Despite acknowledging the increased presence of women in companies compared to when she first entered the labor market, she pointed out that women's representation in senior leadership roles remains a crucial challenge. Moras emphasized that while women are making progress in management positions, there is a significant gap in leadership roles where both men and women diverge typically between the ages of 30 and 40, a point she noted is not coincidental but rather indicative of systemic issues in the workplace that need to be addressed.
