USP creates engineering course focused on semiconductors and AI
The Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo (Poli-USP) is introducing a new electronic engineering course targeting the growing demand for specialists in semiconductors and artificial intelligence, starting in 2027.
The Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo, commonly known as Poli-USP, is set to launch a new undergraduate program in electronic engineering and computational systems, which will begin accepting students through its entrance exams in 2027. This new course responds to the increasing market demand for professionals adept in both hardware and software, particularly in the fast-evolving fields of semiconductors and artificial intelligence. Previously, students interested in electronics had to choose electrical engineering and specialize within it; this new initiative allows for a dedicated pathway for future engineers.
While the introduction of this program marks a significant development in Poli's curriculum, electronics has been part of the school's offerings for some time. The new undergraduate course will provide 56 places annually, allocated from the existing 170 places in the original program, meaning that the total number of admissions to Poli will not increase. This structured expansion aims to address the educational needs of a changing industry where skills in emerging technologies are increasingly essential.
According to Gustavo Pamplona, one of the faculty members responsible for the course's creation, the traditional structure of electrical engineering, which emphasized generalist training for several years, no longer aligns with the rapid changes in the tech industry. As sectors like semiconductors and artificial intelligence develop, the new course aims to equip students with the skills necessary to thrive in these competitive and specialized fields, ultimately contributing to Brazil's technological advancement and innovation landscape.
