Firefighters rescue 19 people in flooding caused by heavy rain in Greater BH

Nineteen people were rescued by the Fire Department due to flooding and an additional 15 were saved from being stranded during heavy rains in Belo Horizonte and its metropolitan area.

On Friday, heavy rains hit Belo Horizonte and the surrounding Metropolitan Region, resulting in significant flooding that required rescue operations by the Fire Department. A total of 19 individuals were rescued from flooded areas, while another 15 were in need of assistance due to being stranded by the rising water levels. The extreme weather led to blocked streets, downed trees, and damaged homes, creating a chaotic situation for local residents.

In addition to the human rescues, emergency services reported numerous incidents of fallen trees, with 14 trees collapsing onto public roads. This included two trees that struck vehicles and another two that impacted residential structures. The emergency teams also responded to two incidents where trees posed an immediate risk of falling. Power outages were reported in several locations, further complicating the emergency response efforts, and there were multiple calls concerning individuals trapped in elevators due to the power loss.

The situation has caused significant traffic disruptions as people returned home, with several key avenues in Belo Horizonte being blocked. This incident highlights the urgent need for improved infrastructure to handle severe weather events and raises concerns about how communities can prepare for similar occurrences in the future, particularly as climate change continues to intensify weather patterns across the region.
