The Lithuanian Ministry of Environment announced its intention to establish three new state reserves in order to protect different types of ecosystems across the country. The proposed Radyščiaus reserve will focus on safeguarding the habitat of marsh turtles, while the Tyklės reserve aims to protect peatland and wet forest environments. The Večių reserve will be designated to preserve rare grasslands that are covered by trees and other valuable habitats. The areas designated for these reserves are approximately 20 hectares for Radyščiaus, 100 hectares for Tyklės, and another 20 hectares for Večių.

This initiative is closely linked with Lithuania's commitments to the European Union, specifically to fulfill the requirements of the Habitats Directive as part of the Natura 2000 ecological network. Establishing these reserves will set necessary conservation measures in place to ensure the health and sustainability of protected species and habitats within their designated areas. In addition to the three new reserves, the Ministry is also planning to expand the existing Stračiūnų herpetological reserve by increasing its size from 76 to 100 hectares. This expansion is intended to preserve biological values and limit agricultural activities that could potentially harm the delicate ecosystem. Overall, these efforts by the Ministry underscore a proactive approach toward environmental stewardship and biodiversity preservation in Lithuania, contributing to the larger EU conservation goals.
