Ville Tavio proposes a new handling fee - "Finnish commerce must be protected"

Finnish Minister of Foreign Trade and Development Ville Tavio proposes a new €5 handling fee for packages arriving from outside the EU to protect local businesses.

Ville Tavio, Finland's Minister of Foreign Trade and Development, has proposed the introduction of a €5 handling fee for packages arriving from outside the European Union, aimed at preserving the competitiveness of Finnish commerce. Tavio points out that the current situation, in which consumers can order products from abroad without additional costs, has created an unfair competitive environment that puts local businesses at risk, threatening their survival amidst aggressive pricing strategies from foreign sellers.

He estimates that this new fee could generate over €140 million annually for the Finnish government if implemented, as evidenced by the 28.2 million packages that came into Finland from outside the EU in 2024 alone. This potential revenue could be used to help reduce the national debt, addressing financial concerns in a time of economic constraints. Tavio notes that other EU countries, like Romania and Italy, have already implemented similar handling fees, showing a trend towards increased protection for local businesses.

Tavio acknowledges that there may be concerns among consumers regarding the potential increase in prices for imported goods; however, he firmly believes that without such measures, the local market will face severe challenges leading to increased bankruptcies. His proposal aims not only to safeguard local commerce but also to ensure a more balanced trading environment where Finnish businesses can compete fairly with foreign entities.
