Outages reported in seven oblasts after large-scale Russian strike on energy system on 7 March
Power outages occurred in seven Ukrainian regions following a large-scale Russian strike on the energy infrastructure on March 7.
On March 7, a large-scale missile and drone attack by Russia targeted energy facilities in Ukraine, leading to power outages across seven oblasts, including Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Poltava, Vinnytsia, Odesa, Mykolaiv, and Khmelnytskyi. The attack resulted in damage to energy infrastructure which prompted emergency measures to be implemented by Ukrenergo, Ukraine's state-owned electricity transmission operator.
Ukrenergo announced that emergency restriction measures would remain in place as a result of this recent attack as well as previous ones, affecting industrial consumers and leading to rolling hourly outages that would impact all household categories. The restrictions aim to manage the limited capacity available due to the extensive damage sustained in the attacks, particularly during the challenging weather conditions.
In light of these circumstances, Ukrenergo has advised consumers to optimize their electricity usage by operating high-power appliances during the day, specifically between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM, when solar power plants are most active. This strategy is essential for ensuring that the limited energy supply can meet demand while dealing with the ongoing impacts of the conflict and resulting supply issues.
