Power outages recorded in four Ukrainian oblasts after Russian attacks
Russian strikes on energy infrastructure have caused power outages in four Ukrainian oblasts including Odesa.
In the aftermath of Russian drone strikes targeting energy infrastructure, four oblasts in Ukraine—Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Cherkasy, and Odesa—have experienced significant power outages. As reported by Ukrenergo, the state-owned electricity transmission operator, many consumers in these regions are currently without electricity, particularly in Odesa where the situation is more severe. The strikes have not only disrupted the electricity supply but have also coincided with an increase in electricity consumption as winter conditions persist.
The situation is compounded by adverse weather in other regions, with outages reported in eight oblasts due to storms characterized by wind gusts and wet snow accumulation, affecting areas such as Mykolaiv, Khmelnytskyi, Kyiv, Poltava, Sumy, Chernihiv, and further in Dnipropetrovsk. As of the morning of February 16, at 09:30, electricity consumption was reported to be 10.8% higher compared to the previous working day. This increase in demand may exacerbate the existing power shortages caused by both military aggressions and harsh weather conditions.
The ongoing conflict has increasingly targeted critical infrastructure, leading to humanitarian concerns as power shortages impact both civilian life and recovery efforts. Restoring electricity in these areas is essential not only for day-to-day activities but also for maintaining health and safety in a country enduring continuous conflict. Keeping the grids operational during these assaults remains a significant challenge for the Ukrainian government and its utility providers.
