Will warmth hit Finland earlier than usual? A promising forecast has arrived

Forecasts suggest that the early summer, especially May, could be warmer than usual in Finland this year.

A recent long-term forecast from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) indicates that Finland and much of Europe might experience a warmer-than-usual early summer, particularly in May. The weather prediction suggests that the thermal spring could begin and progress towards summer at a quicker pace than typically observed. This change not only brings anticipation for warmer temperatures but also hints at a shift in seasonal weather patterns for the region.

The ECMWF's forecast highlights that both April and June may be warmer than average, with May potentially standing out as exceptionally warm. The forecast blog mentions the possibility of a heatwave contributing to this warmth, reminiscent of the extreme case in 2024 when Finland experienced heat for 16 days in May. However, the blog cautions that a warmer May does not guarantee a continuous heatwave, noting that the country averages around three heat days during the month.
