Alcohol Brewed in Space Arrives on Earth... 'Reservation at 900 Million Won per 100ml'

A Japanese sake brewing company has produced alcohol in space, and it will sell for 900 million won per 100ml.

A Japanese sake brewing company, Dassai, has made headlines with its groundbreaking project of brewing sake in space. Recently, on June 6, the fermented sake material arrived at Kansai International Airport after being cultivated aboard the International Space Station (ISS). This initiative aimed to explore the possibilities of fermentation in microgravity and was made possible by sending yeast, rice, and brewing equipment to the ISS last October. The material, after being handled by astronauts, returned to Earth last month, where it was processed to prepare for sale in Japan.

Each 100ml bottle of the resulting sake, named 'Dassai Moon', is set to be sold at an astonishing price of around 900 million won. The CEO of Dassai, Hiroshi Sakurai, expressed relief upon the detection of alcohol in the returned material, emphasizing the significance of the project not just for sake lovers but also for the future of humanity's potential colonization of the Moon. The venture aims to ensure that people can enjoy alcoholic beverages even beyond Earth, with Sakurai stating that brewing on the lunar surface is now a conceivable prospect.

This project is not only about producing unique alcohol; it also aligns with Japan's broader space exploration goals. The sales revenue is planned to be donated to Japan's space development initiatives, showcasing how innovative ideas can intersect with advancement in both space sciences and cultural practices like brewing. As humanity looks toward a future that includes life on the Moon, projects like Dassai Moon could be pivotal, combining scientific exploration with elements of everyday life such as the enjoyment of sake.
