First Police Investigation after the Arrest of Gang Sun-woo for ‘1 Billion Won Nomination Bribe’
Independent lawmaker Gang Sun-woo undergoes his first police questioning following his arrest for allegedly receiving a 1 billion won bribe from former Seoul city council member Kim Kyung.
Gang Sun-woo, an independent lawmaker, is currently facing allegations of receiving a bribe amounting to 1 billion won from Kim Kyung, a former member of the Seoul city council. This interview marks the first police investigation since Gang's arrest four days prior. The Seoul Metropolitan Police’s Public Crime Investigation Unit highlighted that the questioning began on the morning of the 7th, while Kim had undergone a rigorous 13-hour investigation on the 5th, indicating the seriousness of the charges against both individuals.
The allegations suggest that, ahead of the local elections in January 2022, Gang accepted the money secretly packed in a shopping bag from Kim at a hotel in the Yongsan district. While Gang has consistently denied any wrongdoing, the police believe that there was a prior agreement for the bribe, as evidenced by the fact that Gang awarded Kim a single candidacy in return for the financial support. The investigation reveals that the money was allegedly used as rental funds, which could significantly impact Gang’s standing if the claims are substantiated.
Additionally, police are examining allegations that Gang received smaller 'donations' from Kim, which would indicate a broader pattern of misconduct. They are focused on clarifying the facts within ten days following the arrest, which is typically the timeframe to submit the case for prosecution. This scrutiny not only raises questions about election integrity but also may affect public trust in the political landscape, especially in the context of ongoing discussions surrounding political financing in South Korea.
