Mount Royal University students aim to bring more women into aviation
Mount Royal University is hosting an event to encourage more women to pursue careers in aviation, highlighting the underrepresentation of women in the industry.
Mount Royal University (MRU) is taking significant steps to address the gender imbalance in the aviation industry through initiatives aimed at attracting more women into the field. On a recent Friday, the university organized a Women in Aviation Day at Calgary’s Springbank Airport, providing an opportunity for aspiring female pilots to network with industry professionals. The event featured a variety of industry representatives, including female pilots, who came to share their experiences and inspire the younger generation interested in aviation careers.
Kacy Cameron, a second-year aviation student at MRU and one of the event organizers, emphasized the importance of having role models in the industry. She noted that the presence of female pilots was a crucial aspect of the event, as their participation would help demonstrate the various opportunities available within aviation. For many students, being able to connect with someone who has successfully navigated the challenges of becoming a pilot can be incredibly motivative and can foster a sense of possibility about future careers in aviation.
The open house format of the event allowed students not only to interact with industry leaders and fellow students but also to explore aircraft on-site. Cameron expressed her desire for students to envision themselves in aviation roles, advocating that having access to mentors can play a vital role in guiding women into career paths they may not have considered otherwise. This initiative reflects a broader commitment by educational institutions and the aviation sector to promote inclusivity and diversity, addressing the critical underrepresentation of women in aviation.
