New Species of Clione, Named 'Nihon Hadaka Kamegai,' Characterized by Its Round Body Shape

A newly discovered species of clione, named 'Nihon Hadaka Kamegai,' has been identified in the Sea of Japan and noted for its small, round body.

A new species of clione, officially named 'Nihon Hadaka Kamegai,' has recently been identified in the Sea of Japan. This species, which measures only about 4 to 5 millimeters in length, has been documented following a research study published in a journal by the Malacological Society of Japan. It is significantly smaller than the previously known smallest clione, the 'Daruma Hadaka Kamegai,' which measures around 8 millimeters. This newfound clione's distinctive round body shape sets it apart from the more elongated 'Hadaka Kamegai' commonly found along the coasts of Hokkaido.

The 'Nihon Hadaka Kamegai' primarily inhabits the deep seas of the Japan Sea, with its presence confirmed in areas off the coast of Mombetsu and Shiretoko, Hokkaido. The species has the ability to survive in harsh conditions by consuming the nutrients stored in oil droplets, known as 'yukyu.' These droplets can be seen transparently contrasted against its rounded body. While it is capable of surviving despite a lack of food, many aspects of its ecology, including its lifespan, remain poorly understood.

This discovery is significant as it highlights the biodiversity present in Japan’s marine ecosystems, particularly in deep-sea habitats that are often underexplored. Understanding more about the 'Nihon Hadaka Kamegai' can enhance knowledge of marine biology and the adaptations of organisms living under extreme conditions, emphasizing the importance of conserving marine environments.
