Victim of 'fake customer service' scam loses R$ 320 thousand in PI; in February there were 17 cases per day

The data released by the Public Ministry of Piauí (MPPI) revealed that victims reported a total monetary loss of R$ 2.63 million during this period. Among the various scams, the fake customer service scheme stands out, having cost one individual R$ 320,000 alone.

The report detailed several types of scams that have been affecting residents across 75 municipalities in Piauí. The 'fake lawyer' scam accounted for 107 reports, leading to losses as high as R$ 41,000, while the 'fake seller' scam, characterized by cloned websites with tempting prices, affected 73 individuals. Additionally, there were 52 reports related to scams involving deceitful claims of 'family members in distress.' The various tactics employed by scammers underline the urgent need for awareness and education among the public.

The MPPI's findings emphasize not only the financial impact of these scams but also the importance of protective measures against such cybercrimes. With 472 police reports filed, it's crucial for individuals to stay informed about the risks associated with online interactions and to recognize the signs of potential scams.
