Garanhuns launches offer of contraceptive implant Implanon in Basic Health Units
The city of Garanhuns in Brazil has begun offering the Implanon contraceptive implant through its public health system.
The municipal government of Garanhuns, Brazil, has commenced the distribution of the Implanon contraceptive implant in its Basic Health Units (UBSs). This initiative is part of the health services provided by the Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS), targeting women aged between 14 and 49 who wish to avoid pregnancy. It marks a significant step in expanding family planning options within the local healthcare framework.
Initially, the implementation will take place concurrently with a training program for the healthcare professionals involved in the procedure. Approximately 50 women from various neighborhoods are expected to receive the Implanon implant during this foundational phase, which aims to ensure that practitioners are well-equipped to offer the service safely and effectively. The municipal health director, Sweney Herculano, emphasized that training sessions for the UBS staff have recently been conducted to prepare for this rollout.
Looking ahead, the Garanhuns administration aims to broaden the accessibility of the Implanon implant as more units begin administering it by March. This project is anticipated to enhance reproductive health services in the city, aligning with national efforts to improve access to contraceptive methods and empower women in making informed choices about their health and family planning.
