Florianópolis offers Implanon for free in the municipal network
The municipal health system of Florianópolis has begun offering the Implanon subdermal contraceptive implant for free to enhance women's access to safe and effective birth control methods.
The municipal health network of Florianópolis has initiated the free distribution of Implanon, a long-acting subdermal contraceptive method, as part of its services under the public health system (SUS). This move aims to improve women's access to safe and effective contraceptive options, thereby reinforcing their autonomy concerning family planning and reproductive choices. The city anticipates that by June, all 50 primary health care units, as well as the Women's and Children's Polyclinic, will be equipped to provide this contraceptive implant.
Initially, the rollout of the Implanon is linked to the training process of doctors and nurses within the municipal health system. Since November of last year, these health professionals have participated in practical training sessions focused on the safe application of the implant. The strategy ensures that the increase in access to contraceptive methods occurs safely, effectively, and in a gradual manner, catering to the community's needs.
For the initial stage of this program, the municipality has procured approximately 2,000 implants specifically designated for training purposes. This preparation is crucial to guarantee that healthcare providers are well-equipped to offer this service, ultimately aiming to expand reproductive health services and improve health outcomes for women in Florianópolis.
