'Escalation of violence' leads the Ministry of Defense, the Army, and Salinas Naval Base to declare a 60-day emergency

Ecuador's Defense Ministry, Army, and Salinas Naval Base have declared a 60-day emergency due to rising violence and the need for immediate defense resources.

In light of escalating violence and internal conflict in Ecuador, the Ministry of Defense, the Land Force, and the Salinas Naval Base have declared an emergency for a duration of 60 days. This decision was part of a directive from President Daniel Noboa, who instructed the Interior and Defense ministries to assess and potentially declare an emergency situation as outlined in Executive Decree No. 288 on January 16.

Defense Minister Gian Carlo Loffredo announced the emergency declaration on March 2, after 44 days of consideration, citing the inability to conduct standard procurement processes due to time constraints. The urgency of the situation necessitated immediate actions to acquire vital goods and services for national defense, which if delayed, could severely impact the operational sustainment of the Armed Forces.

Loffredo emphasized that without these actions, the Armed Forces would lack necessary resources to maintain public security and fulfill their duties. The declaration underscores the gravity of the situation in Ecuador, where rising violence has necessitated such emergency measures, highlighting the broader issues of security and governance in the country.
