Ikaunieks scores two goals, RFS footballers open the Virsliga season with a victory

The RFS football team began the Virsliga season successfully with a 2-0 victory, highlighted by Ikaunieks scoring both goals during the match.

In an exciting opening match to the Virsliga season, Ikaunieks shone for RFS with two impressive goals. The first goal came approximately 18 minutes into the second half, when he headed the ball towards the opponent's net after a cross from Laša Odišarija. Despite the Ogri goalkeeper's attempt at a save, the ball ultimately found its way into the net, marking Ikaunieks' first goal of the season.

As the match drew to a close, RFS faced a challenging situation when they were reduced to ten men after Ismaels Diomandē received a red card in the 82nd minute. However, Ikaunieks secured the victory in stoppage time, scoring his second goal with another header following a pass from Odišarija, bringing the final score to 2-0. This match not only marked a successful start for RFS, who finished second in the league last season, but it also highlighted the competitive spirit of the newly promoted Ogre team, who previously won the Future League.

This season is significant as it marks the first time since the restoration of independence that a team from Ogre competes in the top division of Latvian football. The upcoming fixtures will see Daugavpils facing Grobiņa and champions Riga traveling to Liepāja, while Jelgava hosts Tukums 2000, and Auda plays at home against Super Nova, promising further excitement in the early rounds of this year's Virsliga.
