Argentina in crisis causes Brazilian vehicle exports to drop nearly 30% in 2026
Brazilian vehicle exports have seen a nearly 30% drop in 2026, largely due to declining exports to Argentina amid economic turmoil.
Brazil's automotive industry, specifically vehicle exports, has faced a significant downturn in 2026, with a reported 28% decrease in exports compared to the previous year. This stark drop can be attributed to ongoing economic crises in Argentina, traditionally one of Brazil's key export markets. During the first two months of 2026, Brazilian automakers exported 59,400 vehicles, down from 82,400 during the same period in 2025, indicating a troubling trend for the future of Brazil's automotive sector.
The Association of Automotive Vehicle Manufacturers in Brazil (Anfavea) highlighted that shipments to Argentina have decreased from 15,600 to 14,400 units, a reduction of 7.5%. This declining performance is particularly concerning, as Argentina significantly contributed to a 32% increase in Brazilian vehicle exports in 2025. During that peak year, out of 528,000 units exported, 302,000 were sent to Argentina, showcasing the importance of the Argentine market for Brazilian manufacturers.
Igor Calvet, the president of Anfavea, emphasized the need for concern given the sharp decline in exports to Argentina, which had previously been instrumental in bolstering Brazil's automotive success in 2025. As the situation unfolds, the Brazilian automotive sector may need to explore alternative markets and strategies to counteract these export challenges, but the present state emphasizes the vulnerability of Brazil's economy to its neighborsβ financial stability, particularly Argentina's.
