Gallery: Johann Köler's Little-Exposed Works Can Be Seen in Viljandi
A collection of 34 lesser-known works by the Estonian artist Johann Köler is on display at the Kondase center in Viljandi.
The Kondase Center in Viljandi is showcasing a collection of 34 lesser-known original works by Johann Köler, along with several copies including drawings, watercolors, and oil paintings. Köler, who grew up and was educated in Viljandi County, is recognized as the first professional artist of Estonian descent. This year marks the 200th anniversary of his birth, which falls on March 8th.
The original works on display have been sourced from various institutions, including the Estonian, Tartu, and Viinistu Art Museums, as well as private collections. Alar Nurkse, a conservator at the Estonian Art Museum, noted that it is customary to scrutinize the condition of such rare pieces after they are unpacked. He emphasized the importance of presenting these artworks in the best possible condition for viewers, often engaging in discussions about the nuances of the artist's work and the standards of authenticity compared to restorations.
Nurkse further elaborated on the depths of Köler's artistry, suggesting that his contributions to art are vast and warrant closer examination. The exhibition serves as a significant opportunity for visitors to gain insight into the works of a pivotal figure in Estonian art history and celebrate his legacy as the nation prepares for his 200th birthday.
