INTERVIEW ⟩ Heiti Hääl: we cannot tell the client not to take the barbecue meat this summer because officials are handling their documents
Heiti Hääl discusses the strategic choice behind establishing an LPG terminal in Riga instead of Estonia, highlighting the implications for energy supply in the Baltic region.
In a recent interview, Heiti Hääl elaborated on the establishment of the LPG terminal by AVH group in Riga, Latvia, chosen for its rapid and efficient setup compared to retracing operational pathways in Estonia. One significant reason for this choice is the anticipated extended timeline in Estonia, where developing a similar terminal from the ground up would take at least five years. This urgency reflects a broader need for the Baltic states and Poland to diversify their gas supplies and mitigate reliance on unstable energy routes from Russia or the Middle East.
The newly operational LPG terminal in Riga enables a strategic conduit for gas delivery from the West to the East, bolstering regional energy security amid geopolitical uncertainties, particularly given the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Despite the expected economic boost from large shipments to this terminal, such as the recent tanker's cargo appreciating in value significantly, companies like Alexela are finding themselves excluded from the surplus revenues generated.
Hääl also addressed the designed system for transporting gas, which involves a sophisticated replacement of large storage tanks with a network of trucks and hundreds of rail cars. This approach seeks to counteract risks tied to the ongoing war in Ukraine and possible future sanctions, ensuring that Baltic states can maintain a stable gas supply essential for their economies and energy independence.
