Manaus will have an aquarium in the Historical Center; service order is expected to be issued by June, says city hall

The city of Manaus will build a new aquarium in its Historical Center, with construction expected to begin by mid-year.

The Mayor of Manaus, David Almeida, has announced the groundbreaking for a new aquarium to be constructed in the city’s Historical Center. The development will also include plans for a covered tourist corridor on Bernardo Ramos Street, which is part of the city's strategic initiative to improve and beautify the urban landscape. Located between Avenida 7 de Setembro and Rua Visconde de Mauá, the aquarium will be near the Lucia Almeida viewpoint and a tourist pier, making it an attractive addition to the area.

The project is part of the second phase of the municipal program titled 'Nosso Centro', aimed at revitalizing Manaus's downtown region. The city has indicated that the official service order for the construction will be issued between May and June 2023, with an estimated construction timeline of about 15 months. This initiative demonstrates the city’s commitment to enhancing its cultural and tourism offerings.

Architecturally designed by the Municipal Institute of Urban Planning (Implurb), the aquarium is planned to encompass 6,400 square meters of constructed area, featuring themed areas that will likely attract visitors and provide educational experiences about aquatic life. The project not only aims to boost tourism but also seeks to engage residents and promote environmental awareness within the community.
