Buttermilk is changing

The Finnish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has mandated that vitamin D enrichment in skimmed homogenized buttermilk is now compulsory.

The Finnish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has introduced a regulation mandating that all skimmed homogenized buttermilk must now be fortified with vitamin D. This change aims to address the previous limitations in the consumption of non-fortified milk products, particularly in educational institutions such as daycares and schools, where D-vitaminated options are crucial. The new regulation will allow for the inclusion of organic skim buttermilk in this vitamin fortification initiative as well.

The implementation of this regulation is expected to take effect from March 6, as highlighted by the ministry's official statement. It notes that this change will enhance the opportunities for organic dairy products, especially in childrenโ€™s nutrition programs, which have previously struggled due to the lack of recommendations for non-fortified dairy options. By standardizing the vitamin D content in both conventional and organic products, the regulation seeks to eliminate disparities in the nutritional provision for children in these settings.

Moreover, the initiative aligns with the objectives of Finland's national organic program and aims to harmonize practices across the dairy sector regarding vitamin D fortification. Feedback was solicited on the draft regulation during a public consultation phase, which drew 13 responses during the summer of 2025. This shows a growing interest in nutritional policies relating to dairy products among stakeholders and suggests that the Finnish government is taking a proactive approach to improving public health standards through dietary enhancements.
