Ombudsman: A large number of Ukrainian prisoners released from Russia have serious health problems

Recent exchanges have brought home 500 Ukrainian citizens, including soldiers, with many reportedly facing serious health issues after captivity in Russia.

In a significant development, Ukraine successfully completed two rounds of prisoner exchanges with Russia, bringing home 500 individuals, which includes both military personnel and civilians. The first round of exchanges took place on Thursday, reuniting 200 Ukrainians, while today marked the second exchange which resulted in another 300 individuals returning home. This operation was conducted in accordance with agreements established in previous negotiations in Geneva.

Among those released are defenders from Mariupol, often referred to as the "Azov men," along with representatives from various other units. The return of these individuals has been met with heartfelt celebrations from families and supporters awaiting their return at the borders. Enthusiastic crowds lined the roads, displaying Ukrainian flags and chanting for the released individuals, creating a deeply emotional scene of reunion.

However, it has been reported that a significant number of these returning prisoners are suffering from serious health issues, raising concerns about the treatment and conditions these individuals faced while in captivity. The Ombudsman had previously warned about the health repercussions of such captivity, highlighting the broader implications for the welfare of returned prisoners and the need for appropriate medical care and support as they reintegrate into society.
