Mounjaro and Wegovy users warned they could be left 'worse off'

New research indicates that users of weight loss medications Mounjaro and Wegovy may regain nearly two-thirds of their lost weight within a year of discontinuing treatment.

Recent research conducted by the University of Cambridge has raised concerns regarding the effectiveness of weight loss drugs such as Mounjaro and Wegovy. Findings suggest that individuals who stop taking these medications could regain nearly two-thirds, or about 60%, of the weight they initially lost within just a year after ceasing treatment. This discovery comes from a study involving more than 3,200 participants, highlighting significant challenges associated with weight management once these weight loss jabs are no longer used.

The data indicates that while there may be some ability to maintain a portion of weight loss, specifically around 25%, most users will see a significant return of lost weight by the end of their treatment cessation. After 52 weeks, the majority of the regained weight does plateau at approximately 75% by the 60-week mark. This reinstatement of weight, particularly if it is predominantly fat rather than muscle, can potentially leave patients in a worse physical state than before they began the weight loss regimen.

Experts, including medical student Brajan Budini, express that these findings underscore the importance of comprehensive weight management strategies. It raises the alarm about the long-term sustainability of weight loss achieved through pharmaceuticals and the need for psychological and lifestyle support to accompany the use of such drugs to maximize their efficacy and ensure healthier outcomes for patients in the long run.
