Medicine: Weight Loss Injections: Do the Pounds Come Back After Stopping?
Weight loss injections like Wegovy or Mounjaro may be effective during use, but most patients rapidly regain weight after discontinuation, according to a meta-analysis published in EClinicalMedicine.
Weight loss injections such as Wegovy and Mounjaro are considered a revolutionary approach in the battle against obesity, but recent findings suggest that their effectiveness is largely limited to the duration of treatment. A meta-analysis conducted by researchers from the University of Cambridge indicates that after patients stop the treatment, approximately 60% of the lost weight is typically regained within a year. This trend raises concerns about the sustainability of weight loss benefits derived from these medications, especially given the rising global obesity rates.
The study analyzed data from multiple research trials involving GLP-1 receptor agonist medications, particularly focusing on the active ingredient Semaglutide, which is found in the drugs Ozempic and Wegovy. While Ozempic is approved in Germany for type 2 diabetes, Wegovy is designated for certain types of obesity. Despite the alarming tendency for weight regain post-therapy, the researchers found that around 25% of weight loss could potentially be maintained long-term, based on modeling calculations.
These findings highlight the need for a comprehensive approach to weight management that includes not just medication, but also lifestyle changes and ongoing support for individuals struggling with obesity. As healthcare providers consider the long-term implications of these weight loss drugs, it becomes increasingly important to address the root causes of obesity and work towards sustainable solutions that extend beyond the use of injections alone.
