Police investigate the death of a man after undergoing a colonoscopy in RO; family says he had his intestine perforated

The police are investigating the death of Thyago da Silva Severino, who passed away following a colonoscopy that allegedly caused an intestinal perforation, according to his family.

Police in Brazil are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of 34-year-old Thyago da Silva Severino, who died shortly after undergoing a colonoscopy on September 27 in Cerejeiras, Rondônia. His family claims that the procedure led to a perforation in his intestine, which he could not survive despite medical intervention. Severino had underlying health conditions, including nephrotic syndrome and Kaposi's sarcoma, which required frequent medical monitoring but were reportedly managed well prior to this incident.

According to reports, the colonoscopy was performed by a doctor who had treated Severino for about eight years. During the procedure, the doctor noted that Severino's intestine appeared 'slightly compromised' and subsequently halted the examination when the perforation occurred. After the event, Severino was immediately taken to Hospital São Lucas in Cerejeiras before being transferred to Hospital Regional de Vilhena for emergency surgery. Unfortunately, the complications from the perforation proved fatal.

The family's allegations have raised concerns regarding the safety protocols and standards practiced in medical procedures, prompting the police investigation to ascertain any potential negligence or malpractice involved in this case. As the investigation unfolds, it is expected to shed light on the case, which has led to significant distress and outrage among Severino's family and community, given the apparent preventability of the tragedy under proper medical care.
