In Uusimaa, the baby boom is so intense that midwives are running out: this is how the evening goes in Espoo
Uusimaa is currently experiencing a significant increase in births, leading to overburdened midwives and hospital resources in Espoo.
Uusimaa region, especially in municipalities like Espoo, is facing an overwhelming increase in childbirths, referred to as a 'super rush'. As reported by midwives, hospitals are managing a surge in births that has forced some to redirect expectant mothers to other facilities due to the overwhelming number. On a typical day, an average of about twelve births occur at the Espoo hospital, and on particularly busy days, that number can exceed twenty.
The statistics reveal a nearly 300-birth increase in the Uusimaa hospitals during January and February compared to the previous year, equating to a 12% workload increase with the same number of staff. Midwife Jemina Räikkönen noted that this year's pattern reflects a consistent trend of busier evenings and heightened activity levels compared to previous years, indicating that the demand for maternity services is steadily rising.
Last year marked a surprising uptick of almost five percent in the birth rate in the Uusimaa region, signifying a broader trend that is particularly pronounced in cities like Helsinki, Vantaa, and Espoo. This surge in birth rates poses challenges to healthcare providers, necessitating adjustments to ensure they can accommodate the growing number of deliveries while maintaining quality care for mothers and newborns.
