Emergency queues continue in Turku - staff at breaking point

Emergency services in Turku are facing ongoing challenges due to high patient volumes caused by influenza and other virus outbreaks.

Emergency services at Turku University Hospital are currently dealing with reduced waiting times for follow-up care, which have halved since Monday, yet about 25 patients still await placement. The situation has been exacerbated by a severe influenza epidemic and other viral illnesses that are leading to increased patient visits in the emergency room. Additionally, there is a shortage of follow-up care slots in elderly care facilities, further straining emergency services.

Mikko Pietilä, director of hospital services at Varha, emphasizes that the challenges faced by emergency services are just the visible part of a larger issue within the healthcare system that affects the entire care chain. While some progress has been made in reducing waiting times, the persistent nature of these emergencies reflects a long-standing problem in the region. This issue has been reported regularly in Varsinais-Suomi, underscoring the chronic nature of the challenges faced by frontline healthcare workers.

The recurring emergency room congestion has drawn attention from regulatory authorities, indicating that this is not merely a temporary crisis but a systemic issue that needs to be addressed to improve healthcare delivery in the region. Healthcare authorities are urged to collaborate on solutions to enhance patient care and reduce the strain on emergency services.
