Kidnappers kill ex-Ebonyi deputy governor’s father
The father of former Ebonyi Deputy Governor Kelechi Igwe, Francis Igwe, has been killed by kidnappers, who were later arrested by police.
Francis Igwe, the father of former Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State, was reported killed by his kidnappers following his abduction on March 1, 2026. The police confirmed that Igwe, who served as the traditional ruler of Ndufu-Alike in Ikwo Local Government Area, was taken while heading to church. After the incident, law enforcement mobilized quickly to locate the victim and apprehend those responsible.
An official statement from the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joshua Ukandu, revealed that following the report of the abduction, intensive operations were launched, leading to the arrest of two suspected members of the kidnapping gang. During questioning, the suspects admitted to the murder occurring shortly after the abduction, specifically on March 2. They also agreed to guide the authorities to their hideout, indicating a troubling development in the investigation into the ongoing issue of kidnapping in the region.
This incident underscores the persistent threat of kidnappings in Nigeria, particularly in regions where crime syndicates operate with impunity. The tragic demise of Francis Igwe not only highlights the risks faced by prominent figures but also raises significant concerns about public safety and law enforcement's capacity to respond effectively. The community and state are likely to intensify their calls for enhanced security measures to prevent further occurrences.
