Pipe Break at Korkeasaari - Bears Awakened

The warming weather has awakened the bears at Korkeasaari Zoo from their winter slumber, as reported by the zoo.

The Korkeasaari Zoo in Finland announced that a broken water pipe due to warmer weather has awakened the bears from their winter hibernation. Sofia, a 25-year-old mother bear, and her 20-year-old cub Yulia stirred from their slumber after being roused by the sounds of the leaking pipe. The bears had gone into hibernation in November; however, their sleep was interrupted earlier in the winter due to mild weather, but they eventually settled down once colder temperatures set in. Interestingly, during particularly cold spells, the bears sought warmth and rested together in their den instead of using separate sleeping places.

The zoo notes that the bears now have the choice to regulate their activity, alternating between resting and venturing outside as they adapt to their awakening. Animal caretaker Susan Nuurtila provided insights on how the bears are managing their new routine, emphasizing their autonomy in choosing when to rest or explore. Upon waking, the bears started to explore their snowy enclosure, although they remained slightly sluggish due to the lingering effects of their hibernation.

In the initial phase after their awakening, the bears are being provided with a diet consisting solely of vegetarian items such as salad, apples, carrots, and light dry food, allowing them to gradually adjust from their prolonged period of inactivity to a more active lifestyle during the spring.
