SIF approves projects for Latvian language courses for Ukrainian residents for 3.18 million euros

The Society Integration Foundation (SIF) in Latvia has approved funding of 3,180,880 euros for 32 projects aimed at providing Latvian language lessons to Ukrainian residents under temporary protection.

The Society Integration Foundation (SIF) of Latvia recently announced the approval of 32 project applications aimed at offering Latvian language courses to Ukrainian residents, with a total funding amounting to 3,180,880 euros. This initiative is part of Latvia's broader effort to integrate Ukrainians who have fled their country amid ongoing conflict and who are currently residing in Latvia under temporary protection status. The funding will support both children and adults, enhancing language skills that are crucial for social integration in Latvian society.

Starting from this year, all adult participants enrolling in the courses at A1 level or above will be required to pass a Latvian language proficiency exam administered by the State Education Development Agency (VIAA), marking a shift from previous years where such examinations were not obligatory. The courses will provide adults with a minimum of 160 academic hours based on their initial language proficiency, while children will receive between 70 and 160 academic hours of instruction, emphasizing the importance of foundational language skills.

Furthermore, there are provisions that mandate in-person attendance for children under ten, establishing an essential early educational framework for young learners. The cost of instruction is regulated, with a cap of 6.30 euros per hour, ensuring accessibility while maintaining quality standards in language education. This initiative not only aids in the linguistical acclimatization of Ukrainian refugees but also reinforces Latvia's commitment to fostering inclusive community relations within its borders.
