City of Rovaniemi: The cargo of the copper concentrate truck has been removed from the area, and no major damages occurred
A truck carrying 40 tons of copper concentrate overturned on the main highway near Rovaniemi, but environmental harm was minimized due to winter conditions that prevented spillage into water bodies.
A truck transporting 40 tons of copper concentrate overturned on the highway between Rovaniemi and Kemi, leading to around half of the cargo spilling onto the ground. Fortunately, Rovaniemi's environmental inspector, Harri Katainen, reported that all but a small amount of the concentrate had been successfully collected and removed from the site. The winter conditions, with snow and ice present, helped prevent a larger environmental disaster that could have occurred had the accident happened in the summer, as the concentrate could have contaminated local water bodies.
The concentrate is harmful to aquatic life, notably fish, and direct contact with skin should be avoided according to Katainen. The truck's removal was overseen by Marko Rautio, head of maintenance for the city of Rovaniemi. The accident resulted in the temporary closure of a section of the main highway, known as Nelostie, near Petäjäkoski, for several hours while the cleanup was conducted, indicating the incident's potential impact on local traffic and safety.
This incident highlights the importance of preparedness for hazardous cargo transport, especially in navigating seasonal weather conditions that can significantly alter risks associated with such transport. Ongoing monitoring and preventative measures are likely essential to mitigate any future incidents effectively.
