Lithuanian officials are expressing strong condemnation over the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in the upcoming Winter Paralympic Games. In a statement from the Government Chancellery, they called for the International Paralympic Committee to revoke its decisions regarding these athletes. They emphasized that no officials from Lithuania will attend the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2026 Winter Paralympic Games unless the committee withdraws its stance, citing solidarity with Ukraine and its people.

The Lithuanian government also deemed unacceptable the committee's decision to prohibit Ukrainian athletes from wearing attire that symbolizes their country, reinforcing the importance of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. They highlighted that no entity should be allowed to undermine Ukraine's independence, which is a fundamental principle recognized under international law. This assertion aligns with numerous United Nations General Assembly resolutions and other international documents that assert support for Ukraine.

Furthermore, Lithuania pointed out that Russia's aggression against Ukraine has been ongoing for over four years, with no signs of cessation. This ongoing conflict is framed within a broader critique of international sports governing bodies, prompting Lithuanian authorities to take a firm stand not only in sports but also regarding international relations, reinforcing their commitment to Ukrainian independence and opposing Russian military actions.
