Sports Minister on the participation of Russians and Belarusians in the Winter Paralympics: 'Our note was not taken into account'

Lithuania's Sports Minister expressed disappointment over the International Paralympic Committee's decision to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in the upcoming Winter Paralympics, despite objections from Lithuania and 34 other countries.

The Lithuanian Sports Minister, R. Popovienė, voiced strong disappointment regarding the International Paralympic Committee's decision that permits Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete in the Winter Paralympics, scheduled to take place in Italy. She stated that despite Lithuania, alongside 34 other nations, formally protesting this participation through a note directed at the Committee, their objections were not considered, and the decision was made just before the commencement of the games. The situation reflects ongoing tensions surrounding the involvement of these countries in international sports events, especially following recent geopolitical tensions.

Amidst these developments, Rapolas Micevičius, the only Lithuanian athlete participating, has already traveled to Italy for the competition. Notably, Micevičius will compete in a category that does not include participants from Russia or Belarus, which was a key factor in his decision to compete. The Minister emphasized the importance of continued collaboration with other countries to address ongoing concerns regarding sports and athletes from nations whose actions have led to international condemnation.

Moving forward, Lithuania's Sports Ministry will engage with other nations to decide on future actions regarding the involvement of Russian and Belarusian athletes in sports events. The broader implications of this issue extend beyond the Paralympics, as it raises questions about how international sports organizations will navigate political pressures and the integrity of competition in a globally interconnected environment.
