Food Poisoning at 'Nigiri Choujiro' in Kakogawa, Hyogo Prefecture: 22 Customers Report Symptoms
Twenty-two customers reported symptoms of food poisoning after eating at the Nigiri Choujiro restaurant in Kakogawa, prompting a temporary closure of the establishment.
On July 6, Hyogo Prefecture announced that a food poisoning incident had occurred at the Nigiri Choujiro sushi chain in Kakogawa, leading to a two-day suspension of operations until July 7. Out of 567 customers who dined at the restaurant between the 1st and 3rd of the month, 22 individuals reported symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal pain. Investigations revealed that six of these customers tested positive for norovirus, a common cause of food poisoning.
The Kakogawa Health and Welfare Office was alerted on July 4 by a local medical institution, informing them that several patients who had eaten at the restaurant on the evening of July 1 were exhibiting food poisoning symptoms. All affected individuals, ranging in age from 12 to 85 and residing in Kakogawa, Kasai, and Akashi cities, had consumed meals served at the Nigiri Choujiro. Upon further investigation, health authorities concluded that the common factor in their illness was indeed the restaurant's food, leading to the determination of a food poisoning outbreak.
As of July 6, all affected customers are reportedly recovering. This incident raises concerns about food safety practices at the restaurant and may lead to stricter regulations within the food service industry in Japan to prevent future outbreaks, especially given the prominence of norovirus in causing such foodborne illnesses. Such incidents can significantly impact public trust in dining establishments, emphasizing the importance of maintaining hygiene and food safety standards.
