Advisor to the President: Expanding Economic Relations is Not Planned in Restoring Diplomatic Relations with China

Lithuanian government officials emphasize that restoring full diplomatic relations with China does not include plans to expand economic ties.

A government official in Lithuania has stated that there is a consensus between the government and the presidency regarding the fundamental goal of restoring full diplomatic relations with China. However, this goal does not entail any plans to expand economic relations, as emphasized during a recent press conference in the Parliament. The official, Dainius Matulionis, stresses that while there is a desire to improve diplomatic relations, the economic ties will remain unaffected for now.

Matulionis further commented on the situation regarding Taiwan, asserting that there is no intention to pressure Taiwan's representation in Lithuania. He acknowledged that the current presence of a Taiwanese representative office should be recognized as a fact to be lived with. This indicates Lithuania's balanced approach to its positioning concerning both China and Taiwan amid geopolitical tensions in the region, especially given China's assertive stance towards Taiwan.

The comments reflect Lithuania's cautious diplomatic approach as it navigates its relations with China, balancing the need for diplomatic engagement while also being mindful of regional dynamics involving Taiwan. As China continues to exert influence in the region, maintaining this balance will be crucial for Lithuania's foreign relations strategy moving forward.
