The Itä-Uudenmaan District Court has remanded a 71-year-old man into custody on probable cause related to a fire that occurred in Vantaa's Pähkinärinne area. The suspect is charged with five counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder, and aggravated arson. The police suspect that the blaze, characterized by its rapid and explosive spread, was intentionally set by the accused.

The tragic incident unfolded on a Tuesday morning when the fire engulfed an apartment building, resulting in the deaths of two adults aged 35 to 40, along with three young children aged 3, 6, and 8. All deceased victims were from the same family and were found in the stairs of the building. Additionally, a baby from the family suffered severe injuries and was hospitalized, along with three others who sustained minor injuries and required further treatment. A remarkable detail came to light as the 18-year-old sister of the deceased mother managed to escape the fire.

Authorities indicated that the victims belonged to a Somali background, but emphasized that the act of arson was not targeted at them, and there was no indication of a racially motivated motive behind the crime. The police are currently continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fire, seeking to understand the full extent and nature of the tragedy that struck this community in Vantaa.
