These three factors will determine how electricity prices will develop in the spring

Electricity prices in Finland have fallen after February peaks, but expectations are shifting towards higher prices due to various influencing factors.

Following the peak in electricity prices in February, there has been a decline; however, market expectations have adjusted towards a prediction of higher electricity rates. Pekka Salomaa, the director of the Energy Industry, explains that the price of natural gas, which has risen due to the ongoing war in Iran, has limited impact on Finland since electricity prices are primarily determined by other local factors.

Vattenfall, a notable energy company, reports that the water reserves in the Nordic countries are at their lowest in a decade, which poses the risk of increased electricity prices in the upcoming spring months. Furthermore, maintenance work on the Olkiluoto nuclear power plants is set to begin in April, which could also contribute to higher electricity costs. The average price of electricity in February reached โ‚ฌ0.1722 per kilowatt-hour, the highest in a decade, driven by severe cold temperatures and calm weather conditions. Presently, however, milder weather has led to a reduction in electricity prices.

In the immediate future, the evolution of electricity prices will be influenced heavily by temperature and wind conditions. In the longer term, other elements, such as energy production capacity and international price trends, will also play significant roles in determining the future landscape of electricity costs. Therefore, stakeholders in Finland must closely monitor these factors to anticipate fluctuations in electricity pricing.
