The price of electricity is again high today

The price of electricity in Finland is expected to rise today, reaching over 20 cents per kilowatt-hour in the morning before dropping in the afternoon.

Today, the price of exchange electricity in Finland is experiencing a significant hike, with the hourly price surpassing 20 cents per kilowatt-hour at 8:15 AM. The peak price is projected to occur around 9 AM when quarter-hour prices are about 26 cents per kilowatt-hour. After this, there will be a drop in prices to below 20 cents, expected around midday. However, a second peak is anticipated before 6 PM, with prices exceeding 20 cents again for a couple of hours.

The average price of electricity for the day is approximately 16 cents per kilowatt-hour, with VAT included. Historically, February has shown a trend of high electricity prices, influenced by cold weather causing increased demand, still conditions leading to lower wind energy production, and issues like freezing wind turbines. Therefore, despite a temporary drop in prices, the overall trend remains upwards due to these compounding factors, reflecting the volatility of energy markets in response to varying demand and supply conditions.

This ongoing situation emphasizes the challenges Finland faces with energy security and pricing, especially during prolonged cold spells when electricity demand spikes. It underscores the importance of diversifying energy sources and ensuring that adequate capacity is available to manage consumption peaks, while also considering sustainable energy frameworks.
